Do your neighbours consistently call around to your house to give you some of their organic fruit and vegetables that they’ve grown in their garden greenhouse? It probably doesn’t matter how often they come around, they still won’t bring you enough to keep you and your family in fresh organic produce seven days a week and every week of the year, so perhaps you’ll have to look at greenhouses to provide your own produce.

Why own your own greenhouse?

There’s a whole range of reasons why you should look to find greenhouses here so you can select a model that is suitable for your garden, for your size of family and for the amount of food you need to grow across a year.

You will be helping the environment by growing your own organic fruit and vegetables because you won’t need to purchase goods that have travelled halfway across the world to bring you food that wouldn’t normally are available at various times of the year.

You’ll be saving money because once you’ve paid for the greenhouse, the expense of a few seeds and some organic fertiliser means that your fruit and vegetables will be costing you next to nothing and everyone knows that organic produce in your local superstore is priced very highly even in comparison to the non-organic produce.

You will be educating your family about the benefits of going back to basics and being able to cook your own food, which can be growing in your greenhouse on a Sunday morning in January and be transported and cooked for Sunday lunch later in the same day.

What you can do with your own greenhouses?

So you want to make real lemonade across the winter? Fine, go into your own garden greenhouse and pick limes so you can make your own drinks. Buying installing a suitably sized model from a range of greenhouses, you can grow almost what you want anytime of the year.

Some fruits and vegetables struggle to grow in a British garden because of the variations of the weather, but once you have a well insulated and well ventilated and occasionally heated garden greenhouse, almost anything becomes possible as you can bring tropical weather elements to your garden in February.

Heating your greenhouse will enable you to grow produce across all 12 months of the year, but even if you don’t add a heating system to your garden greenhouse, you will be able to add at least six weeks to either end of the normal growing season.

When you look amongst the various models available as you find greenhouses here, you can order your variation to arrive at your home in kit form, in just a few days. With the help of just one person you can have your greenhouse up and running across a weekend and have your first seedlings showing their first signs of life just a few days later.

Apart from feeding your own friends and family across the whole year, growing fruit and vegetables in your garden greenhouse gives you the opportunity to offer some of your produce to charity concerns in your local community where they will be able to distribute your produce to people who are struggling, financially. That alone, is a good enough reason to spend some time growing fruit and vegetables in greenhouses across the winter months, when many people are looking at higher utility bills in the cold season.

When you’re thinking of ways to add a greenhouse to your garden, your mind will almost certainly picture a wooden or metal greenhouse with glass panels. You wouldn’t immediately consider plastic to be an option for a greenhouse. Nevertheless, polycarbonate greenhouses are the favourite choice of people in the know.

Polycarbonate or plastic greenhouses are manufactured in factories to the highest quality with very up-to-the-minute materials. The finished unit presents an extremely attractive feature for your garden and will certainly not look out of place compared to wooden or metal greenhouses.

What are polycarbonate greenhouses?

They are made from various polycarbonate materials, which means they are extremely strong and very long-lasting. The glass part, which is really polycarbonate, is shatterproof and won’t provide any of the dangerous problems that can arise with thin greenhouse glass. The polycarbonate panels are extremely good at only allowing through the sun’s rays that are good for your plants and filter out those that are unwanted by both plants and humans. These panels keep the inside warmer in colder weather than glass or metal greenhouses.

Animals that would prefer to spend time eating in your greenhouse will not be attracted to find a way through the polycarbonate, which provides your fruit and vegetables with a much higher level of safe and secure growth.

Polycarbonate greenhouses are particularly good at repelling the natural elements of the British weather system. They do not suffer particularly through rain, snow and frost or too much sun.

Are they easy to erect to?

With someone to help you for health and safety reasons, two sensible people should be able to erect a polycarbonate greenhouse across a weekend.

Being able to add a greenhouse in such a short period of time means that you can get on with the work of growing your organic fruit and vegetables much quicker than if you are trying to build your own wooden greenhouse.

There is a large range of shapes, sizes and styles to choose from in the polycarbonate series. It will pay you long-term to purchase a polycarbonate greenhouse that is larger than you would originally choose, providing it is still within your budget, because these units are so effective at helping you grow fruit and vegetables across the whole of the year, you will be pleasantly surprised to want to add to the variety of your produce for your family and friends.

The maintenance work on a polycarbonate greenhouse is relatively simple. You will only need to carefully wipe down all of the surfaces regularly to provide a safe environment for your produce. If you had chosen a wooden greenhouse, you will have needed to treat the wood each year to prevent it from having damp and rot problems.

By using polycarbonate panels you are avoiding all of the dangers that can arise by using thin glass panels in a wooden or metal greenhouse. That significant difference can be a good enough reason for you to purchase the plastic variety. If you have small children who are going to be helping you in your greenhouse, to grow all of the fruit and vegetables that you need for your dinner table, you will be extremely pleased that potentially dangerous glass is not part of the equation.

There are many benefits in purchasing a polycarbonate greenhouse and if you are ready to add a greenhouse to your garden, they are safer and more effective than any of the alternatives.

To be able to enter your greenhouse at any stage during the winter and pick a lemon to liven up your main course at dinner, along with a selection of out of season vegetables and an orange for dessert, needn’t just be a dream that belongs to other people. A garden greenhouse from Waltons can offer you a wonderful opportunity to provide your family with a complete selection of organic fruit and vegetables all year round at a fraction of the price you would expect to pay in your local superstore.

If you want to grow lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and beetroot and eat healthy salads across the winter as well as the summer, there’s nothing stopping you if you plan and prepare your greenhouses early.

Three essential ingredients for your garden greenhouse

Your garden greenhouse will benefit from the combination of three essential ingredients; heat, light and ventilation.

Heating your greenhouse is essential during the winter months to provide an environment for your organic fruit and vegetables to grow successfully. Without sufficient warmth, your plants will wither and die when the first frosts of the season arrives. Installing a heating system in greenhouses is an essential element if you are to provide a balanced atmosphere across several months.

Luckily, there are many daylight hours across the UK, during the summer months, but unfortunately there are not sufficient daylight hours between October and March to give your organic fruit and vegetables the growth period that they require, so you will need to install additional lighting in your greenhouse to make sure that your plants received 10 to 12 hours light a day to make sure they can grow vigorously.

Ventilation is vitally important to provide the balance of the movement of air while not keeping a damp atmosphere within your greenhouse. If your greenhouses become too damp in the air, you will encourage the growth of mould and mildew on your plants, which may eventually kill them. You will also support a great environment for the many bugs that will visit your garden greenhouse because they love to live in a damp area and specifically enjoy the food of eating your fruit and vegetable plants.

Managing your essential ingredients

For your winter growing period to be successful in your greenhouse, you will need to find the right balance between heating, lighting and ventilating your growing room. If you provide too much heat, your plants will wither and die because they will dry out.

When you are new to growing fruit and vegetables in a greenhouse, it is essential that you choose a greenhouse that is large enough to provide all of your family’s provisions, yet not too large so that you are overwhelmed by the task ahead.

The location of your greenhouse is important because it needs to take advantage of the most sunlight that can pass through it during a day in your garden. Some people suggest that you should attach a greenhouse to your home so that a garden greenhouse can benefit from the warmth of your property, but this may not be the most perfect location to receive the maximum amount of sunlight available.

A properly installed central heating system should ensure that all the rooms in a house with a radiator are equally heated. In practice, however, many home owners find that some radiators heat up quickly when the heating is turned on, while others take a long time or barely produce any warmth at all. This obviously defeats the purpose of having central heating and in winter time can result in a toasty warm kitchen and a freezing sitting room. The solution to this problem is to balance the radiators, making sure that each one receives that same amount of hot water.

Rather than calling out a plumber to fix the system, with all of the expense that involves, you will find that the problem is fairly easy to remedy yourself. Just follow these simple instructions and you will have heat evenly distributed around your house.

1. Before you start balancing the radiators you will often first need to bleed them. You can check if this is necessary by feeling the top and bottom of each radiator. If it is warm at the bottom and cold at the top, then you will need to bleed it. Turn off the central heating, then use a bleed key to allow the air to escape from the radiator. Make sure that you put a container under the bleed valve before doing this, to prevent any water damage.

2. Once you have bled the radiators, you are ready to balance them. Before doing this it is important to turn make sure that the central heating is turned off and that all of the radiators have cooled down. The next step is to open all of the valves on all of the radiators in the house. This means both valves on each radiator. There is one on each side – the thermostatic valve and the lockshield valve. You will need a spanner or special adjuster to open the lockshield valve.

3. The key to balancing the radiators is the lockshield valve. This has a plastic cover which will need to be removed before you start. Begin by closing this valve completely on the radiator nearest to your boiler. Then gently open it by one quarter turn. Now go to the next nearest radiator and open the lockshield valve slightly more than the first one. Move from radiator to radiator, in order of distance from the boiler and open the valve on each one slightly more each time. This will allow the radiators that are the furthest from the boiler to receive the stronger flow of hot water that they need to heat up properly.

4. The next step is to turn on your boiler and check the temperature of each radiator in the house. The system should be fairly evenly balanced by now but you can continue to make adjustments on the lockshield valves until you have it exactly as you want it. If you want to be very precise you can use a digital thermometer on each radiator to get exact temperatures.

As you can see, the process of balancing your central heating system is very straightforward. The key is to be methodical about it and make sure that you do it step by step and have the right parts such as stainless steel bolts and the correct tools.

One of the results of the recession is that more people have set up their own businesses and are choosing to work from home.

Decorating your bathroom to create a comfortable and luxurious room to suit your needs, preferences and tastes can be a difficult endeavour but it is nevertheless invariably a hugely rewarding experience that lasts as long as you use the bathroom. From tiles to baths to mirrors, every single detail large and small will add to the style and feel of your bathroom to make it more personal.

No matter how humble in size or how enormous your bathroom is, one of the most important stylistic features of it will be the bathroom mirror which can completely change the feel of the entire room. Probably the most essential factor influencing your decision on choosing a bathroom mirror ought to be how it will fit into the room as whole. Firstly, in terms of size, a mirror should never exceed the size of a vanity unit over which it is placed. When it comes to style, the mirror, vanity, lighting, tiles and all other features of the bathroom should match. Many people find that framed mirrors and oval mirrors particularly suit traditional looks, whereas unframed, circular and bevelled mirrors go well with more contemporary styles.

There is a vast array of types of bathroom mirrors available and these are ideal for different purposes, designs and placements. There are scissors extension mirrors, table mirrors, counter mirrors, magnifying mirrors, wall-mounted mirrors and heated mirrors. Furthermore, there are oval, circular, rectangular and polygonal mirrors; framed and unframed; and so on. When looking for a mirror, finding one that suits the room is of utmost importance. However, it may also be worth considering and enquiring about other factors such as its clarity, scratch resistance and lighting facilities.

These features may affect how easy the mirrors are to maintain and use. In fact, most bathroom mirrors are relatively straightforward to take care of by ensuring they are well-cleaned. By using simple solutions, vinegar or ammonia and some towels or a sponge, a mirror can be wiped to look as good as new. Doing this whenever the mirror is in need of a clean will keep it in good shape and ensure that it lasts long and is able to serve its purpose at all times.

Another factor that will certainly be worth investigating when installing a bathroom mirror will be the question of mirror demisters. One of the most common problems everyone faces when it comes to bathroom mirrors is the condensation that inevitably covers them after a bath or shower. Mirror demisters, however, work by inconspicuously installing an ultra thin pad behind the mirror. This heating pad, once installed, gently keeps the mirror warm to avoid condensation in a highly effective and convenient fashion.

Your living room should be both stylish and comfortable, and one of the key pieces of furniture the helps achieve this is the coffee table. How big should it be? What colour should it be? What material should it be made of? Read on to get answers to all of these questions, and then head to Achica Luxury Design to start shopping.

First, you should do a “test run” to see how the coffee table will blend with the other furniture. This doesn’t mean that you should actually go get a coffee table and try it out. You will fare much better if you measure your furniture (mainly the sofa) and the space where you would like to put the coffee table. When you decide to go shopping, these measurements can help you decide which table is just the right height and length. But in the meantime, place some crates or boxes in the space in the same height and length as your measurement. There’s no better way to prime your living room for a new piece of furniture and make adjustments to your measurements, if necessary. This will also give you an idea of how you feel about filling the space.

Before you go shopping, you will also want to think about the utility that you would like your coffee table to have. If you like to have a lot of gatherings in your home, you may want to consider a material like glass that doesn’t swell when it gets wet (because accidents happen). Or, if you are a fan of traditional home style, a deep-coloured, rich wood would suit your decor better. If your coffee table is going into a media room with a big screen television, DVR, and lots and lots of discs, you may want to shop for one that has storage space underneath the table top. And finally, if you are a homeowner who loves to change the look of your living room often, a minimalist design in white is a good idea.

If you would like to add visual interest to your living room, however, you can use a strategy of compare and contrast. For example, in a living room that features sharp corners, a round coffee table can break up the monotony. Or, you can choose a material for your coffee table that pairs well with, but doesn’t mimic, the other furniture or items. Bronze fixtures on your coffee table may coordinate well with the dishes in a nearby china cabinet, for instance.

After sorting out what you want from your coffee table, you can strike a balance with the perfect piece of new furniture in your living room. For more inspiration and style ideas visit the Guardian’s homes and interior section.

Especially for loved ones who have just purchased their first home or who have recently welcomed a new member, bespoke furniture has the benefit of being both useful and fun to receive. From custom cribs to handmade china cabinets, here’s how you can make a lasting impression with this kind of gift.

Why choose bespoke furniture?

Custom furniture gives a homeowner a chance to express his or her personality in a unique way. If you tap into your recipient’s likes, hobbies, and interests, you can create a meaningful gift that is useful in the best way. Also, it is a chance for him or her to include furniture that matches perfectly with the decor, which can be difficult to do if they are choosing from pre-made furniture, no matter how wide the selection is.
Bespoke furniture also offers the possibility of sentimentality. Very rarely will homeowners gush over a couch or a coffee table bought at a retail furniture store, but a bespoke piece of furniture will likely stay in the family for generations. Keeping this in mind, you may even want to incorporate a special item, such as fabric from a loved one’s scarf or melted gold or silver from a cherished ring or necklace. There are more creative ways to make your custom chair or table sentimental as well, such as using reclaimed wood from a childhood home.

How to go about making bespoke furniture

Measurements are key. This is probably the least sentimental part of the process, but you will need to find out how much space you will have to fill with the gift, which means you should have some suggestions on where the recipient could place it in his or her home. This could actually be a benefit for homeowners who have uniquely-shaped layouts and cannot find stock furniture to fit it.

You will also want to keep aesthetics and functionality in mind. One of the primary benefits of getting custom-made furniture is being able to dream up and then create the perfect television stand with storage for everything you need, for example, or an L-shaped sofa that is actually big enough for your living room. Take advantage of the chance to balance these two factors by working closely with the furniture maker.

Remember to present your gift with the same sentimentality that you put into it by choosing from a wide selection of birthday cards, and for more design inspiration, visit the Guardian’s lifestyle section.

There is a huge selection of hot tubs currently on the market, so how do you choose which of them is going to be best for your needs? With such a wide range, confusion can sometimes set in. Most customers opt for one of the cheapest hot tubs but you should always arm yourself with as much information as possible before making a decision.

A hot tub is a generic term for a portable tub that is filled with chemically treated, filtered and fully circulating water. It is recommended that the water used inside is removed and replaced at least once a quarter in order to maintain hygiene standards. Overall, a hot tub is a popular item because of the unique warmth and luxury that it offers at any time of the year.

Generally speaking, there are two distinct functions of the hot tub: recreation and exercise.

Obviously there is the recreational aspect to hot tubs, as the majority of purchasers are only ever looking to unwind and relax in their tub at weekends or at the end of a long day. However, many people purchase hot tubs with exercise in mind.

Aqua aerobics is extremely popular at the moment and this form of exercise can be very good for you. You can practise elements of this in a hot tub, but if you intend to do so, make sure you have more depth in the tub itself so that you can move around.

If your intended use is purely recreational, however, remember to buy a tub with as many seats as you need for yourself, family and friends. Usually, four seats is the optimum number.

Needless to say, your decision will be based to some extent on price and on the space you have allocated in your garden. On the second point, always measure carefully and leave at least three feet around the tub so that you and your guests can get in and out unimpeded. As far as price is concerned, you can select from the cheapest models of hot tub right up to the most expensive products depending how much you have allocated for your budget.

Always keep in mind any additional costs. There may be installation charges to consider, while some reports suggest that a hot tub can add between £15 and £20 a month to your utility bills depending on usage. Take your time and arm yourself with as much information as possible to make the right purchase. Above all, don’t forget to enjoy your hot tub!

There are many types of coffee machine on the market and depending on how often you intend to use it and how many cups you want it to make, you could spend under £100 on a basic one or up to £500 or more for a top model. Whatever your requirements, choosing coffee machines at Argos can help to save on costs.

The most expensive coffee machines on the market are bean to cup coffee machines, which are so called because they allow you to add your own coffee beans, which are ground for you to make the coffee. Hot water is added to the ground coffee, which goes straight into your cup. Milk frothers are also included with some models, allowing you to make lattes and cappuccinos. This machine is the equivalent of having a coffee shop in your own home.

For those who prefer to grind their own beans, a pump espresso machine would be the best choice. Not only do they allow you to use your own ground beans, but you are able to make more than one cup at a time. The water is heated in a separate tank to the perfect coffee making temperature and milk frothers can also be added if you wish.

If you do not want the fuss of dealing with coffee beans, a Pod coffee machine may be the product for you. With these machines, the coffee has already been ground, roasted and blended for you and placed in a sealed pod. When the pod is placed in the machine, the heated water is forced through it and the coffee goes straight into your cup. This is definitely the easiest and cleanest way to enjoy fresh coffee.

The cheapest and easiest to use devices are filter coffee machines. This type of machine boils the water, which flows through the ground coffee that has been placed in a paper or reusable filter. The coffee then flows into the jug that is provided underneath. The jug is on a hotplate, meaning fresh coffee stays hot for some time after being made. The size and variety of jugs available mean that this is ideal for making larger quantities.

Whether you are a coffee connoisseur or a budding amateur, the variety of machines on the market means that whatever your budget, or whatever type of coffee you prefer, there is bound to be something to suit your requirements.
