Pitfalls to Reupholstering Armchairs and Lounge Chairs
Many have pondered the idea of buying armchairs and lounge chairs new, or going the route of attempting to reupholster something they can pick up used and then reupholster it themselves. The idea being that it should cost less to buy a piece of furniture past its prime, that needs some attention, but can live to please again. In addition, some romanticize the act of refurbishing articles and returning them to their former glory, or even improve upon them.
I have been in that place, and reupholstered on many an occasion. As such I am here to warn those contemplating the task of pitfalls they may encounter. First, and possibly most important is the fact that your efforts to revitalise a worn out chair can ultimately cost you more than simply buying a nice new one. Second, there are some chairs that are more agreeable to being fixed up than others, and it is strongly advised that you learn which is which before making any purchases. Third, you could end up with something that is beyond repair due to damage. A good example is if it has become the playground for woodworm.
Hence, those considering reupholstering chairs should recognise that they may encounter these issues and determine it the risk is worth the benefit. Because what may look like a bargain at first blush could in due course prove to be more of a money pit, or just junk. I have experienced both good outcomes and bad, and thought it best to share in what I have personally learned the hard way.
